purplehead sneezeweed, Helenium flexuosum

Purplehead sneezeweed is a plant of open moist ground. You can often find it with these little yellow creatures crawling over the purple head. Actually they are the pistils of the disc flowers. Looking at the middle flower head, you can see a ring of these tiny flowers as they first open. The pistils soon curl back, in case they need to reach the pollen all by themselves. That's right, there's pollen there among the purple. There may be as many as 700 of these tiny disc flowers in a head. Purple sneezeweed grows in AL, AR, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI(S), MN, MO, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, VT, WI, WV, NS, ON, and QC.
