weakleaf yucca, Yucca flaccida

The next time you see blooming yucca, make a date. Visiting with it after dark is a delight. During the day, the flowers seem kind of bell-shaped and kind of dull. But for your date, wow! The flowers open wide, and there is a delightful night-time fragrance. Light, with maybe a touch of vanilla. All this finery is because they already have dates with night-flying moths. Weakleaf yucca hangs out in dry open usually sandy fields in AL, AR, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, LA, MD, MI, MO, MS, NC, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, WI, and ON. Native from TX to NC, and spread northward by gardeners. Lenawee Co MI, 6/26/18.
