flame azalea, Rhododendron calendulaceum

Georgia's state flower must be the peach blossom! Nope. The peach is their state fruit. But their azaleas are certainly a compelling choice, and there's no better example than flame. This one comes in colors from yellow to deep red-orange. Nothing grabs your eye like some of these, burning at you from the woods or roadsides. Georgia has about a dozen species of wild azaleas, and an incredible array of cultivated varieties. Flame azaleas grow in AL, CT, GA, KY, MD, NC, NY, OH(E), PA(X), SC, TN, VA, WV, and in gardens all over the world. Hidden Lake Gardens, Lenawee Co MI, 6/1/13.
