trailing arbutus, Epigaea repens

Massachusetts state wildflower is the mayflower, more often known as trailing arbutus. Mayflower is a bit of a misnomer. This plant is a very early bloomer, with flowers often seen in March, and certainly by April at these climes. Why would Massachusetts call it mayflower? Is Mayflower important to them in another context? If only I could think what! Trailing arbutus grows in AL, CT, DE, FL(E), GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY(V), OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, WA, WV, LB, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC, and on SPM. Midland Co MI, 3/25/12.
