cockspur hawthorn, Crataegus grus-galli

Missouri's state flowers are hawthorns. They wisely did not try to pick a specific species. No two botanists can agree on hawthorn species. These small trees are amazingly variable. Cockspur hawthorn has relatively narrow leaves without lobes, and is one of the most consistent and widely recognized members of the genus. According to USDA, cockspur hawthorn grows in AL, AR, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN. KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, VT, WI, WV, NS, ON, and QC(L). Flora of North America does not recognize this species in ME, NH, VT, and NS. A small example of the complexity and disagreement about hawthorns. Ives Fen Preserve, Lenawee Co MI, 5/6/12.
