Siskiyou lewisia, Lewisia cotyledon
Montana's state wildflower is bitter-root, Lewisia rediviva. Having no image of that, we will look at the very similar Siskiyou lewisia, also called cliff maids. Both species grow high in the western mountains. They have become popular rock garden plants. These spring beauty relatives have larger flowers, a little over an inch across. The fleshy roots of Lewisia were eaten by Indians, and were populer enough to be an iten of commerce in their culture. Siskiyou grows in CA and OR. Cultivated, Lenawee Co MI, 6/6/13.
