Spanish bayonet, Yucca harrimaniae
Yucca is New Mexico's state flower. One wonders if they might have a special appreciation for night life down there. In days of yore, after a really hot daytime, you could sit outside and watch the moths pollinating the yucca. Actually, I'm sorry I missed my chance to do exactly that. At the time I took this picture, I didn't fully appreciate what happens with yuccas after dark. Now I would drive back up on the mountain to see that show. Yucca flowers open wider, put on their perfume, and the moths do come. This species grows in AZ, CO, NM, NV(P), OK, and UT. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Montrose Co CO, 6/20/13.
