frangipani, Plumeria obtusa
Frangipani is the floral emblem of the Northern Mariana Islands, where it is called flores mayo. This Territorial emblem has long been one of my very favorite flowers. Native to tropical America, it is now pan tropical. Frangini was an important symbol in Mayan and Aztec culture. It is now the national flower of Nicaragua, there called sacuanjoche. Frangipani has become important to many cultures, particularly in Polynesia and south Asia. In Hawaii, you are likely to be welcomed with a lei made of these fragrant flowers. Frangipani now grows wild in Hawaii. Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, Ft. Wayne, IN, 9/6/13.
