mariposa lily, Calochortus gunnisonii

Mariposa or sego lily is Utah's state wildflower. The very similar C. nuttallii is their particular species. Shortly after the Mormon's moved to Utah, their crops failed for several years. These edible bulbs and buds helped them get through. Almost seems a shame to eat something so beautiful. These two-inch flowers always look like tulips on steroids. Mariposa lilies grow in AZ, CO, MT, ND, NE, NM, SD, UT, and WY. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Montrose Co CO, 6/21/13.
