Wyoming Indian paintbrush, Castilleja linariifolia
Wyoming's state wildflower is a beautiful plant. The actual yellowish flowers are mostly hidden in the bright red bracts. Wyoming has fifteen species of paintbrush, all of them beautiful. Perhaps this species was chosen because it was the most used by Indians for food, medicine, ceremonies, and decoration. Paintbrush is very difficult to cultivate. It is partly parasitic on the roots of its neighbors. Wyoming paintbrush grows in AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, UT, and WY. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Montrose Co CO, 6/20/13.
