Hoarsemint, oops, I mean horsemint is a different sort of Monarda. Note the pollinating parts hanging from the upper lip. This plant contains a natural antiseptic. It was much used by Indian medicine, mostly for coughs, colds, fevers and sore throats. So hoarsemint makes sense. Not sure where the horses come into it! Horsemint grows in open, often poor or sandy soil in AL, AR, CA, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY(X), LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NM, NY, OH(E), OK, PA(E), SC, TN, TX, VA, VT, WI, ON, and QC(L). Monroe Co MI, 6/26/11.
