plains coreopsis, Coreopsis tinctoria
Plains coreopsis is one of our prairie flowers that we've adopted for our gardens. Most of us are familiar with these showy yellow flowers with their deep red centers. Sometimes the red is very limited, or even missing. Sometimes it expands to take over the whole flower. I suspect the garden flowers have been selected to show off not just the colors, but the variation itself. I'm not sure what caused the shape of the strap flowers on the right flower head here, but that's interesting too. Also called golden tickseed, this species has now been found in every state except NV and UT, in AB, BC, MB, ON, QC, SK, Mexico, and China. Polk Co, TN, 7/6/18.
