Natal plum, Carissa macrocarpa

Natal plum is here today as a silly whim. Chosen only because it will go in the photo album next to Madagascar periwinkle, and because its native African name is num-num. The edible red fruit is a little like a plum, but with a cluster of small hard seeds inside. These small trees often have their white flowers and red fruit together, and make a good ornamental planting in the tropics, particularly in salty coastal regions. That's how they've gotten to the scrub areas of Florida. Brevard Co FL, 1/27/13.
