This is a very variable plant. The flowers of smooth honeysuckle vary from this lighter shade to deep red. The plants are often twining vines, but in open areas like the Great Lakes shores may be small shrubs. Most leaves look much like other honeysuckles; oval with petioles. The flowers are at the ends of branches, and the leaves immediately below the blooms form the background you see here.
