small-leaf tick-trefoil, Desmodium marilandicum

These little guys have got you covered. You can walk through a field of beautiful fall color, and when you're done you discover you've been engaged in seed dispersal. Your jeans may have turned greenish brown. Small-leaf tick-trefoil and its numerous relatives never miss a trick. Anything that moves is covered with this little triangular annoyance. Or maybe they do miss out. When I get home I spend a half hour picking them off. I don't have the heart to throw them in the garbage. They go into the compost can, but they don't ever seem to sprout. Why can't they survive compost, after all that effort? Not that I'm complaining. Small-leaf tick-trefoil grows in AL, AR, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MO, MS, NC, NH(E), NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, WV, and ON. Kitty Todd Preserve, Lucas CO OH, 8/9/13.
