red valerian, Centranthus ruber
Red valerian is another garden species that spreads. In South Africa it is banned because it is so aggressive. It has not yet become a problem here, but it is spreading in the West. It is very happy in rocky, particularly limestone, habitats. The leaves and roots are edible. A native of the Mediterranean area, it now has been reported from AZ, CA, HI, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, SD, UT, WA, and WY. Cultivated, Lenawee Co MI, 6/4/14.
