chameleon, Houttuynia cordata
Chameleon? If anyone knows why, let me know. In its native Asia it is fish mint, or fish leaf, after its flavor. It's related to our lizard's-tails, but still? There can be some color in the leaves, but they don't change. Maybe it's like kiwi fruit, and people buy more chameleons and kiwis than fish leaf or Chinese gooseberries. It is marketed across south and east Asia. It is a chutney ingredient in India, but Wiki reports that the flavor is not universally appreciated. In North America, it has been reported wild from Washington. Beal Gardens, MSU, 6/23/14.
