rough bedstraw, Galium asprellum

Galium is a large genus, about 650 species, that we have not previously taken a look at. Rough bedstraw seems to me to be pretty typical. The flowers are many, but barely an eighth of an inch across. The plants have weak sprawling stems, flopping around and creating loose mats. They are bedstraws because many species were once gathered, stuffed into bags, and used as bedding. Rough bedstraw grows in CT, DE, IA, IL, IN, MA, MD, ME, MI, MO, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, TN(S), VA, VT, WI, WV, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, and QC. Ives Fen Preserve, Lenawee Co MI, 7/25/15.
