southern dewberry, Rubus trivialis
Yesterday's Adrian Symphony concert included Connie Ellisor's Blackberry Winter. In its three movements she uses two very different mountain dulcimers and the orchestra's strings. A picture may be worth a thousand, but there simply are no words for music like this. Mountain dulcimers are a traditional instrument from southern Appalachia. Southern dewberries are a blackberry you would find in the same region, if not usually in the winter. Music can do things the camera just can't. Southern dewberries grow in AL, AR, FL, GA, IL, KS, KY, LA, MD, MO, MS, NC, OH(X), OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, and WV; south into Mexico. Hillsborough Co FL, 1/24/13.
