Virginia mountain-mint, Pycnanthemum virginianum

Virginia is perhaps our most widespread mountain-mint. Perhaps our most common too, but a little limited by its preference for fens. These flowers are only an eighth inch or a little more across. The purple spots make them worth a close look. Virginia occurs in a variety of open, usually moist settings in AL, AR, CT, DE, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NH(E), NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SD, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, NB, ON, and QC(L). Lenawee Co MI, 7/21/11.
