pinyon pine, Pinus edulis
Pine nut terrorism? Pine nuts are eaten pretty much everywhere, involving a couple of dozen species. Historical removal of the trees in North America to create grazing land is now considered a significant act of cultural and ecological terrorism. Treaties currently give some Indian tribes exclusive rights to the harvest. Now in the age of casinos, they can't get enough workers to do the harvest, and have to hire Caucasian migrants (just kidding). It has been discovered that the crop in our southwest is declining because of climate change. This species of pinoli grows in AZ, CA, CO, NM, NV, OK, TX, UT, and WY.
