white lettuce, Prenanthes alba

White lettuce is one of the many late season aster family flowers, but a little different. These flower heads are a little less than an inch across. They're a welcome sight in the aster and goldenrod season. The Chippewa, Iroquois, and Ojibwa people used them to treat a variety of ailments, including dog bites. They grow in woodlands in AR, CT, DE, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY(E), MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SD, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, MB, ON, QC, and SK(V). Lenawee Co MI, 9/6/11.
