showy goldeneye, Heliomeris multiflora
All those 'Heli-' plants - Helianthus, Helianthella, Heliopsis and this mostly have golden eyes. Brown eyes like common sunflowers are the exception. Apparently the only help the pollinators get finding the business center is the ray flowers and their grooves that lead inward. Unless of course they can see ultraviolet directions that we miss. This plant was conveniently growing, and likely planted, at the Mesa Verde Park headquarters. Many of our parks have small gardens of local flowers, much to the delight of the wildflower crowd. Are we a crowd? These goldeneyes show off in AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, NY, TX, UT, WY, and Mexico. How did NY sneak in there? The park must not be the only place this is in and out of a garden.
