poison hemlock, Conium maculatum

Might this be the world's most infamous plant? Saw a TV mystery the other night in which this was the instrument of death. Of course, they got the symptoms wrong. But 2418 years later we still remember Socrates death by hemlock more than anything else about him. I bet there have been a lot more deaths, human and others. Hemlock started in Europe and North Africa, and now is a noxious invasive in many places. I pulled one out of my neighbor's garden last year. This image may not do justice to a gangly aggressive plant taller the we are. Here it grows in all states except AK, FL, HI, and MS, and in NB, NS, ON, PE, QC, and SK. Lenawee Co MI, 6/9/11.
