marsh skullcap, Scutellaria galericulata
Being happy in wet places is a real advantage for a wildflower buff. Of course that's only because it's a real advantage for all those flowers that bloom in wetlands. This one can be seen by us muck waders in almost any damp spot in the temperate northern hemisphere. This skullcap flower is about an inch long. At the base you can see the upward pointing cap that gives it its name. The Delaware used this as a stomach stimulant and laxative. The uses don't seem compatible, but I guess that doesn't matter if they don't really work much anyway. This skullcap grows in every state except AL, AR, GA, HI, LA, MS, SC, and TN, in all provinces, and on SPM. Ives Fen Preserve, Lenawee Co MI, 7/3/11.
