New Mexico thistle, Cirsium neomexicanum

New Mexico is a little more than some. Larger flower heads, plants up to six feet, and definitely larger spines. Even thicker stems, which served the Yavapai well when they looked for ones to peel and eat. For the Navaho, the roots were a panacea. The flowers can look like this, or be pink. New Mexico grows in AZ, CA, CO, NM, NV, UT, and Sonora. Great Sand Dunes National Park, Saguache Co CO, 6/25/13.
