Creativity among plants isn't limited to wildflowers. The spleenwort family of ferns is amazingly variable. Walking fern is one of the most fun examples. You'll note the long points on the larger leaves. If you follow the one in the lower right to its end you can see how this fern walks. Those attenuated points root at their ends when they find a suitable spot. And suitable doesn't require much. A moss covered spot on a rock is just fine. Walking fern was a companion to the snow trilliums found on the Ohio trip. They grow in AL, AR, CT, DE, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, ME(X), MI(T), MN, MO, MS, NC, NH(E), NJ, NY(V), OH, OK, PA, RI(E), SC, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, ON, and QC(S).
