yellow rocket, Barbarea vulgaris
Spring! Glorious spring! When the weeds spring forth! Why do I like dandelions so much more than this mustard? This is bigger, and if anything brighter. Those little bumps on the buds are a nice touch. And it's a natural bug control. There are insects that like mustards, and lay their eggs on this. But it turns out they can't survive here. Grow this in your field, and those pesky diamond-back moth babies will munch your crop no more! The weeders of the skunk cabbage patch at Ives Preserve has always passed these by. Maybe there was more purpose to that than I knew? Yellow rocket can be found in every state except AZ, HI, ND, and NV, and in AB, BC, LB, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC,and SK, and on SPM. Lenawee Co MI, 5/6/13. PS, in response to a question. We pull weeds around the skunk cabbage, as one would do in other cabbage patches. The skunk cabbage remains largely undisturbed. We also weed the rest of the area. Come out some Saturday morning and join this exclusive club!
