smooth sumac, Rhus glabra
We're all familiar with those big, dark red panicles of berries in the fall. Sometimes we notice the panicles earlier, when they catch the eye only because of size and perhaps their pyramidal shape. But have you ever stopped to take a really close look at the flowers? Well, here! Now you don't need to? Whether they stop you or not, they are certainly successful in the art of propagation. Smooth sumac appears in thickets, or makes its own, in every state except AK and HI, and is in AB, BC, MB, ON, QC(L), and SK(E). Ingham Co MI, 6/28/19.
