white toadshade, Trillium albidum

Stemless trilliums in the east all have flowers of the same dark red, with occasional yellowish or green forms. Go west and things get more creative. Looking at white toadshade, you get a feeling it just needs to spread its petals. Apparently it doesn't think so. Case notes that this is the only western stemless species that reliably persists through a Michigan winter. Toward the south edge of its range, it devolves into an almost unidentifiable hybrid swarm. White toadshade grows in shade in CA, OR, and WA. Garden of Roberta and Fred Case, Saginaw Co MI, 5/8/81.
