standing cypress, Ipomopsis rubra

Standing cypress stands about three feet tall. Cypress trees get to 80 feet or more. So why call this one 'standing'? In any case these columns of bright red flowers are very attractive. They have seduced their way into our gardens, which I have to admit is the only way I've gotten to see this one. Native to the southeast, it's now escaped from those gardens in other areas. Standing cypress has been reported from AL, AR, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NY, OH, OK, SC, TN, TX, VA, WI, and ON. Beal Gardens, MSU, 7/26/12.
