narrowleaf trillium, Trillium lancifolium
Of all the different trilliums, this is one of the more different. The leaves are narrow and drooping. The petals narrow, often twisted. Not to mention the general aspect of a stemless trillium, with those small flowers reaching up from the junction of the leaves. Narrowleaf trillium grows in a number of separated areas from south to north. The southern populations bloom in February to mid-March. The northern one in mid-April to May. It's in shade, often under poison ivy, and particularly in floodplains, in AL, FL, GA, MS, SC, and TN. Garden of Fred and Roberta Case , Saginaw, MI, 5/16/81.
