Confederate wakerobin, Trillium reliquum

This trillium is listed as endangered by the U. S. It's a true rarity, found only in a small location on the GA/SC border, and another on the AL/GA border. When the stigmas are receptive to pollen, it has the odor of spoiled meat. The Cases say, "Fortunately, the odor is not strong and can be detected by the human nose only at very close range". He did not consider this a good garden plant, even though it's hardy as far north as where he lived in Saginaw, MI. Garden of Roberta and Fred Case, 5/8/81.
