sweet cherry, Prunus avium

All the critters leave seeds behind after we've eaten fruit, including me. Apples, pears, peaches, plums, all those berries, yum! The cores and seeds go out the window or are just dropped. Certainly we've all left behind our share of cherry pits. Sometimes they take root and produce the next generation, like this one at Ives Preserve. Left by a worker a couple of decades ago? The volunteer crew will be there right now, maybe planting something more at lunch time. Although they mostly just leave pistachio shells. Sweet cherry trees have been reported from AZ, CA, CT, DE, ID, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MT, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, UT, VA, WA, WI, WV, WY, BC, NB, NS, ON, and QC. Lenawee Co MI, 5/6/13.
