bulblet fern, Cystopteris bulbifera

Bulblet fern doubles down on reproductive strategy. It produces spores like other ferns. It also produces these small bulblets, about a quarter inch across, that fall and become separate plants. I guess this makes good sense for a plant that frequents rocks and cliff, an effective way to spread downward. Bulblet fern grows in woods, in mostly calcareous areas, in AL, AR, AZ, CT, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NY(V), OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WI, WV, NB, NF, NS, ON, and QC.
