King Devil, Hieracium caespitosum

King Devil is but one of many common names for this hawkweed. Meadow or field hawkweed are the other most common of the common names. Fox-and-cubs may be the most fun. But why hawkweed? Ancient lore had it that hawks use the plants to strengthen their eyesight. In any case, this European immigrant has made sure we get plenty of chances to use its monikers. It particularly likes to hang around places we've messed with, and left thin or depleted soil. The fox and its cubs has now been reported from CT, DE, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MT, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, SD, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, WY, and provinces except NT, NU, and YT. Lenawee Co MI, 6/13/14.
