early black blueberry, Vaccinium tenellum
A black and blue berry? How could one resist calling it that? And here are the flowers, in a thicket behind the roadside lunch stop. I've been fascinated by the vase-shaped flowers of the heath family ever since my first glimpse of a wintergreen in bloom. The longer, narrower shape of some of the southern species were an unexpected sight for my Mich-centric lenses. Early black blueberries are mostly a coastal and Piedmont species in AL, FL, GA, MS, NC, SC, and VA. Looked like there would be plenty of good picking before long. Morton Co GA, 3/15/16.
