field sow-thistle, Sonchus arvensis
These Eurasians pop up all over America, and on days like today it could be a good thing. Coffee machine died in the night!
Mother Earth says the roots can be used as a coffee sub, much like chicory. But probably a little tricky and bitter in this season. This sow-thistle is common in fields and on roadsides in every state except AL, AR, FL, GA, MS, OK, SC, and LB, and is on SPM. That's OK, because I'm sure those places have coffee sellers too.
