Flower petals are mostly very delicate, and badly treated by the elements. This musk mallow had just survived a rain storm in pretty good shape. The downpour left it with a little more texture than we would usually see. Musk mallows are a sort of old fashioned flower, mostly grown for their beauty. The leaves, buds and even flowers were sometimes used as vegetables or in salads. I would leave then in the garden - not much flavor, and kind of a slippery texture. Musk mallows are now occasionally wild in CA, CT, DE, ID, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MO, MT, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, TN, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, WY, BC, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, and QC. Hidden Lake Gardens, Lenawee Co MI, 8/10/11. Mallow family, Malvaceae.
