smooth beardtongue, Penstemon calycosus

239. So many Penstemon, so little time! I just received the most recent volume of Flora of North America. Each one is special, partly because a guy in their office once told me they wouldn't finish in my lifetime. They seem to be on track. The first came out in '93. There are still 8 to go. Anyway, this one, number 17, includes the 239 species of Penstemon, and so much more info and fun. Today's smooth or longsepal penstemon is a mostly prairie plant from AL, CT, GA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI(T), MN, MO, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, and ON. FNA says its range is expanding because of escapes from cultivation, particularly eastward. Kitty Todd Preserve, Lucas Co OH, 8/9/13. Plantain family, Plantaginaceae.
