sand reed grass, Calamovilfa longifolia
Grass flowers aren't the most beautiful or eye-catching blooms. With their wind-chime anthers and feathery pistils, they are not without interest. This one earned a spot here by hiding for six years. Somehow it got lost in the shuffle and never processed. Wonder if it had anything to do with my allergy to its family's pollen? Here in Michigan, sand reed grows mostly on lake dunes, and is an important factor in slowing erosion. Elsewhere it is also a prairie grass in CO, IA, ID, IL, IN, MI, MN, MO, MT, ND, NE, NM, NY, OH, PA, SD, WA, WI, WY, AB, BC, MB, ON, and SK. Mason Co MI, 8/23/13. Grass family, Poaceae.
