coastal sweet pepperbush, Clethra alnifolia

Coastal sweetpepperbush is a small shrub that has become popular for landscaping and gardens. There is a pink variety, darker forms of which have been developed. Decoctions of this plant were used as medicine by the Cherokee, mostly for digestive issues. Among the citations is one that says they used it as an emetic and another says it was an antiemetic. Be interesting to know more about that! This native grows wild in AL, CT, DE, FL, GA, LA, MA, MD, ME(S), MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, SC, TN(T), TX, VA, and NS. Matthaei Gardens, UM, 8/17/12.
