hoary frostweed, Crocanthemum bicknellii

Hoary frostweed gets its name from the ice that forms on the stems after a hard freeze. The stems burst and ooze sap to produce that icy effect. There are other unrelated species that do the same thing. Hoary frostweed occurs in AR, CO, CT, DE, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY(T), MA, MD(E), ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH(T), PA(E), RI, SD, TN(X), VA, VT(T), WI, WV, WY, MB, and ON.
