Here's another small St. John's-wort from last Saturday's outing. But what's a wetland species doing growing there in apparently dry sand? A few feet away some ORV tracks give it away. Just a few inches down reveals damp ground, and a few more inches produce standing water. The water table there is only about nine inches down. Even a small plant like this can easily reach it. This flower is small, about a quarter inch across. The plant was about six inches. Northern St. John's-wort grows in CT, DE, IA(E), IL, IN, MA, ME, MI, MN, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH(T), OR, PA, RI, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, BC, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC, and on SPM.
