Northern bush honeysuckle is closely related to honeysuckles, and is included in that family by some authorities. Unlike honeysuckle genus Lonicera, which produce berries, Diervilla fruit are capsules. Algonquin, Chippewa, Cree, Iroquois, Menominee, Meskwaki, Ojibwa, and Potawatomi people used compounds and infusions of this to treat a variety of ailments.
