common sneezeweed, Helenium autumnale
Sneezeweed is a natural snuff. It's powdered leaves were used by Indians to cause sneezing, which in turn was believed to relieve headaches. Infusions of leaves and roots were used for other needs. The Menominee believed it had alterative effects - that it was able to gradually restore normal functions. Now we mostly know it as one of the very last plants in bloom each season. It often hangs in there until frosted. Common sneezeweed grows in every state except AK and HI, and in AB, BC, MB, NT, ON, QC, and SK. Ives Fen Preserve, Lenawee Co MI, 9/23/20.
