heartleaf twayblade, Neottia cordata
We've mentioned before that not all orchids are big showy blooms. Heartleaf twayblade may be our champ for small and green. Even an orchid expert like Fred Case said it's easy to walk by a patch of these and miss them. On their best days these may be six inches tall, with a few flowers as long as 3/16 inch. I suppose in the world of the gnats that pollinate them, they're plenty big enough. Heartleaf twayblade grows in damp acidic ground, often in bogs, in AK, CA, CO, CT, ID, MA(E), MD(X), ME, MI, MN, MT, NC, NH(T), NJ(E), NM, NV, NY(V), OH(X), OR, PA(E), RI(X), UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, WY, throughout Canada, and on GL and SPM. Summit Co CO, 6/16/13. Orchid family, Orchidaceae.
