candyroot, Polygala nana

Candyroot is a cute little plant, rarely more than six inches tall.  Here it's even smaller, in an early stage of bloom.  The flower clusters will get longer and more cylindric.  Then the lower flowers start to fall, and it gets a little leggy, if that's possible at six inches.  The root has a licorice flavor, which I didn't know when I got this chance.  Probably just as well.  Leave the plant for the next guy that climbs that fence.  Candyroot grows in sandy areas in AL, AR, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN(E), and TX.  Polk CO FL, 3/18/16.  Milkwort family, Polygalaceae.
