This one is often called heartleaf willow, but its leaves aren't heart shaped. On the other hand, Michigan is more the heart of its distribution, with the Missouri River at the fringe. The Lakota and Ute used the branches of this small tree for basketry. Many other tribes probably did too, along with branches from many other species. Those willow bushy willows all look a lot alike.
