nun's-hood orchid, Phaius tankervilleae

Nun's-hood is a terrific plant. Three foot lily-like stems with these flowers up to five inches across. Small wonder this was the first tropical orchid that bloomed in an English conservatory. That was in 1788. Thank you Lady Emma Tankerville! Fortunately, we're gardeners too, so here we have it from Bok Tower Gardens in Florida. Also, of course, it has escaped to the wilds of FL and HI. Polk Co FL, 3/17/16. Orchid family, Orchidaceae.
